There are very many Lake Oconee Churches to choose from in the lake area. Remember, this is the Bible Belt! Church-goers moving to a new area want to know that they can find a comfortable place in which to continue their worship on a full-time, or part-time basis. Lake Oconee has churches that are both old and new. Our own church, the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro, is the oldest church with constant operation in the area. It has been in constant operation since 1863 when the first members met in a local home for communion. When we joined in 1991, there were only about 30 members, and we shared our priest with a nearby town. Being one of the few liturgical church buildings around, we provided a birthing place for a Presbyterian, then a Catholic church who now have their own locations. Presently, we have in excess of 180 members, our own priest, and two services. The building was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Through the years, the parish has accepted members from many other faiths who fell in love with the warmth of the small group in the beautiful church.
Lake Oconee churches provide opportunities for volunteerism in the area, as well as places to fulfill one’s spiritual needs, and meet other like-minded people.
