At Lake Oconee, as in most communities, the beginning of a new school year turns the focus to volunteerism towards the children. Greene County Schools staged a welcome-back-to-school for students. Community volunteers greeted the students as they arrived by car or school bus with warm “welcomes”, and free pencils, pens, and bookmarks. This year I joined in at Carson Middle School (that’s me pictured on the left). Notice how nice the students look in their uniforms of black or khaki pants, and solid colored, polo shirts! The students will be assigned their own netbook for the year as many textbooks are now online.
Another way for volunteers to support children is through the Greene County Boys and Girls Club. This organization was named the Charity of the Month at the popular Silver Moon Restaurant in the Lake Oconee area. A percentage of the Silver Moon food and drink sales during the month of August will be donated to the children’s charity. Also, the restaurant will open for the Boys and Girls Club on two Monday nights during the month. During the special Mondays, chances for Silver Moon gift cards and ticket packages for special events will be raffled. Look for the Second Annual Festival of Trees, the Boys and Girls Club major fundraiser, to be held in November 2012.
To volunteer to support children in the Lake Oconee area, phone the Greene, Putnam, or Morgan County Board of Education, or the Greene County Boys and Girls Club.
