After researching general information about what constitutes a satisfactory retirement location, I have created my own list of Reasons to choose Lake Oconee as your retirement home.
1. Climate
Lake Oconee has the proverbial four seasons that make life more interesting. Spring arrives in March, Fall presents a show of colorful leaves, Summer can be hot, and it is rare to have any snow in Winter. Outdoor activities are feasible for the majority of the year.
2. Recreation
Today’s seniors want to continue the active life they had been living. Here is a partial list of Lake Oconee sports:
- Boating
- Fishing
- Golf (7 local courses)
- Paddleboarding
- Kayaking
- Horseback riding
- Cycling
- Tennis
- Pickleball
- Off-road trail riding
If you enjoy spectator sports, college football and professional baseball, basketball, and football are a little more than an hour away in Atlanta. In the spring the community is hopping with patrons who attend the Masters Golf Tournament, only an hour away. There are also unlimited opportunities for hobbies such as painting, bridge, and book clubs.

After independent living becomes a concern, the Lake Oconee area has several alternatives for assisted living. There is a choice of costs, and of level of care.

Many retirees enjoy giving back to the community. At Lake Oconee, there are many opportunities to volunteer; churches, schools, and large charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club, and Goodwill to name a few. Many of us choose to mentor a child in the local school system.
